Everything You Need to Know About Graphic Designing
What is Graphic designing?
According to Juliette Cezar;
“Graphic design, also known as communication design, is the art and practice of planning and projecting ideas and experiences with visual and textual content. The form it takes can be physical or virtual and can include images, words, or graphics. The experience can take place in an instant or over a long period of time. The work can happen at any scale, from the design of a single postage stamp to a national postal signage system. It can be intended for a small number of people, such as a one-off or limited-edition book or exhibition design, or can be seen by millions, as with the interlinked digital and physical content of an international news organization. It can also be for any purpose, whether commercial, educational, cultural, or political.”
To put in simpler words, graphic designing is everywhere. The billboards you see, the cereal you eat, have you seen the box? When ordering a taxi for yourself from a mobile phone app, you must have noticed the design on it. It is a merger of strategy, creativity, communication, art, marketing, and design.
Graphic designing is all about communication and keeping in mind what your client needs and wants. So, it is not just about beautiful photos. It is what those pretty pictures communicate.
Principles of Graphic designing
There are five principles for every design and not just graphic design.
1. Balance:
If a design lacks balance, for example, one side of the design is more weighted than the other. It might look cool, but the whole design fails to grab the eyes of the target audience. They might miss an important element. Therefore, it is important to have balance in a design for structure and stability
2. Contrast:
This happens when two contrasting things are placed together. It can be a color or a shape. Contrast grabs attention in a design. Every design needs at least some kind of contrast, so it pops out, creates an impact, and accentuates a key point.
3. Repetition:
Repetition leads the eye across the page. The trick is to have a variation of the design and not the same design over and over again. The goal is to keep the attention and not bore the audience. Repetition integrates and strengthens the design.
4. Hierarchy:
As the name suggests it is the disposition of things according to their importance. Hence, you want the most important feature to be the most dominant and the one that is least important to be on the last point of hierarchy. This principle is essential for organization and which direction should the design take.
5. Alignment:
A properly aligned page would have a dominant side that catches the eye and a dormant side that will have the other details. For example, a newspaper has headlines, which contain key information, and less important is in a smaller font. This principle gives clarity and sharpness to the design.
Graphic Design and UX.
Graphic designing is used for digital marketing using the aesthetic appeal. It attracts the viewers and audience by using design, colors, and typography. While creating a design, a graphic designer must not only keep into consideration the artistic or aesthetic side of the design but also keep in mind the users. The design should be visually appealing and easy to use.
Your interactive design must have strong architectural information. For example; a visually appealing website or a mobile application that is not user-friendly is useless. Don’t just create art, create a design with a great user experience.
“Design is a solution to a problem. Art is a question to a problem.”
— John Maeda, President of Rhode Island School of Design
